First, natural lumber outdoor structures and furniture require paint, stain, or other finishing as well as ongoing maintenance over the years. These products are susceptible to the extreme weather often experienced in the Pacific Northwest. Poly lumber offers a way to reduce natural lumber use in a time when our forests are increasingly under pressure from wildfire, drought, insects, and urbanization. Second, poly lumber is created using post-consumer and post-industrial HDPE (high density polyethylene) plastic that offers a way to take back some of the ground lost to single use plastic. By utilizing recycled milk jugs, detergent bottles, and other similar products to create products these “forever” materials are put to use for a much longer time.
